Rest and Renew: Self-Care for the Christian Woman
GGrace Chen, LPC
•The concept of "self-care" can sometimes feel at odds with the Christian call to selfless service. However, caring for ourselves is not selfish; it's an act of stewardship. When we are rested and renewed, we are better equipped to love and serve God and others.
A Biblical Mandate for Rest
God Himself modeled rest. After six days of creation, He rested on the seventh (Genesis 2:2). He also commanded rest for His people through the Sabbath. This wasn't just about ceasing from labor; it was about trusting in His provision and making space for spiritual renewal.
What Does Godly Self-Care Look Like?
- Sabbath Keeping: Protect a day of the week for rest, worship, and activities that refresh your soul.
- Nourishing Your Body: Honoring your body as a temple (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) includes healthy eating, exercise, and adequate sleep.
- Time in Nature: Creation points to the Creator. Spending time outdoors can be a powerful way to de-stress and connect with God.
- Setting Boundaries: It is wise and healthy to say "no" to commitments that overextend you, protecting your time and energy for what God has called you to do.
Embracing self-care is about embracing your God-given humanity. By resting and renewing your mind, body, and spirit, you can live a more vibrant, sustainable life of faith.
